Ring
A single stone, held as little as it can be held.
The commission asked for a ruby that had never been heated. It took nineteen months to find one worth setting, and three attempts to design a mount that held it without hiding it.
The final setting touches the stone at four points. Everything else is air. Seen from above the metal almost disappears, which is the whole intention: the ring is a way of carrying the stone, not a frame around it.
The band is deliberately unpolished on the inside. It marks with wear, and it is meant to.
